Anthropic is setting aside 5 per cent of its share capital for a public interest fund, and up to 20 per cent of the total shares

An LLC owned by Anthropic will receive 5 per cent of the shares, plus a further 2 per cent for every 50 per cent increase in the company’s valuation. The first area of focus will be the impact of AI on employment.

Anthropic announced on October 18 the creation of theAnthropic Public Benefit Funda limited liability company of which it is the sole owner and to which it intends to transfer 5% of its shares, subject to the vote of its shareholders. The mechanism is indexed to growth: 2 additional points will be paid each time the company's valuation increases by 50% above a reference threshold.

By adding the promises already made by the co-founders (who undertake to give 80% of their personal participations) and the programme of abundance of employee donations, in which about half of the staff participate, the company estimates that about one fifth of its capital will end up devoted to causes of general interest.

An LLC rather than a foundation

The choice of a CLL rather than a traditional charity should leave more room for giving or investing. Anthropic, however, excludes any use of these funds for lobbying or political activities, both in the United States and elsewhere. The first area cited is where its own activities cross the public interest, starting with the labour market consequences of AI, a subject for which the company had already pledged $200 million. Governance rules and valuation levels must be detailed in the coming months.
