The new version of Anthropic’s code agent generalises sub-agents that inherit the conversation context, speeds up the loading of plugins and adds a compaction setting in the event of inactivity.
Anthropic published version 2.1.302 of Claude Code on 16 October. Key change: "fork" sub-agents, which move from the context of the current conversation to a blank page, are now active by default in non-interactive mode (claude -p) in SDK Agent, desktop application and VS Code extension. They remain deactivated by an environment variable. Other behavioral changes: Sub-agents launched since the main conversation are now turning systematically in the background.
Plugins and automatic mode
The plugin system gets faster at startup, with much less disk access needed to load commands and agents, especially on Windows. Several defects are fixed, such as marketplaces of plugins re-closed at each refresh or configuration entries lost at the output. As for automatic mode, long conversations are now compacted instead of seeing rejected tool calls, and a new variable allows you to choose the model of the customer-side classifier. A compaction adjustment during periods of inactivity also appears in /config.
