Waymo allowed to extend its robotaxis to 18 Californian counties

CPUC validates Waymo's service extension to Sacramento, San Diego and about fifteen other counties, including Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay.

California's energy and transportation regulator (CPUC) has given Waymo the green light to expand its driverless rides to 18 counties, including new markets like Sacramento and San Diego, in addition to bolstering already covered areas like Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area. The decision follows a request filed by Waymo in January regarding its safety plan for the expanded service area announced as early as November 2025.

The company says the rollout will be phased in, county by county, and will remain governed by its own security framework rather than immediately opening up the service everywhere. A complementary review on unaccompanied minors and procedures in the event of a service disruption was also filed by Waymo in May.
