Mayor Daniel Lurie has signed the moratorium passed unanimously by the Board of Supervisors; the planning department is to assess the impact of data centres and propose regulations.
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie signed a 45-day moratorium on any new data center location in the city on Oct. 16. The bill, sponsored by Supervisor Shamann Walton, an elected official from the city's southeast, had been passed unanimously the previous week after a fast-track procedure by Council President Rafael Mandelman. Without the mayor's signature that day, it would have gone into effect automatically anyway.
During this pause, the planning department must measure the effects of these facilities and develop a sustainable framework. Walton is calling for transparency on their water and energy needs, as well as compensation for the neighborhoods concerned. The city has at least six data centers according to the Data Center Map, including two at Bayview-Hunters Point — a census that city departments have not even kept until now. In his statement, Daniel Lurie promises a "thoughtful and responsible" framework that protects electricity rates, water and air quality.
