Atlas: Amazon’s AI tool that rates its UK warehouses according to their ‘risk’ of unionisation

According to openDemocracy, Amazon assigns its sites a score between 100 and 900 based on Reddit posts and internal surveys; Sutton Coldfield and Coventry are at the highest alert level.

An openDemocracy survey describes Atlas, an internal Amazon tool that estimates the likelihood that a warehouse will see industrial action emerge. Each site receives a score between 100 and 900 (the lower it is, the higher the risk), then is classified into one of five levels, from level 5, "no perceived immediate risk", to level 1, where mobilization would be "imminent". The model cross-references hundreds of signals: posts on Reddit, responses to internal satisfaction surveys, history of industrial disputes, and data on the workplace.

Two UK sites at the highest level

Sixteen warehouses in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom would be classified as Level 1, including two English sites: the Sutton Coldfield Robotic Centre (EMA4), an investment of £500 million, and Coventry (BHX4). It was in Coventry that the GMB union failed by 28 votes in July 2024 to obtain official recognition in a ballot involving some 2,600 employees.

Amazon denies any idea of surveillance: the company assures that this feedback is used to improve the daily life of the teams and that the tool only works at the level of the building, never of the individual. The GMB and the NGO Foxglove, on the other hand, see it as a "very intrusive" device, designed to hinder the organization of workers.
