Workday acquires C1.ai to manage access for employees and AI agents alike

The former ConductorOne, a specialist in identity governance, is set to make Workday the central hub for managing the access rights granted to staff and agents within the organisation. The price has not been disclosed.

Announced on October 13 at Workday Rising in Las Vegas, the agreement includes the acquisition of C1.ai, formerly ConductorOne. This identity governance platform connects to the company's systems (email, CRM, code repositories, finance, cloud infrastructure) to assign each person and each agent the necessary access, keep track of validations and remove rights that are no longer necessary.

HR as a switch for agents

Workday wants to become the identity governance layer for "people, money, and agents": rights would automatically follow an employee's lifecycle, from arrival to departure, and AI agents' permissions would be controlled from the same repository. To justify the operation, the publisher argues that 95% of large American companies already use autonomous agents, while only 21% have a mature governance framework.

The amount was not disclosed. Closing is expected by the end of Workday's fiscal fourth quarter on January 31, 2027.
