Shopify is opening up its catalogue of over a billion products to all compatible AI agents

Staff can now search for items, add them to a basket and pay via Shop Pay, but each purchase must be approved by the buyer, who can set a budget and conditions.

Shopify significantly expands its bet on "agentic" commerce. Announced on October 13, 2026, the novelty allows any compatible AI agent to explore the platform's catalog, which exceeds one billion references, to build a basket and adjust the order with Shop Pay, all through a unique connection based on the Model Context Protocol (Shop MCP). So far, access required negotiated partnerships, such as the one signed in September with Meta for his agent Muse.

Human Keeps Signature

The user connects his agent to his Shop account and can set him rules, such as a maximum budget or preference for fast delivery. However, the agent will not finalize the transaction until the buyer has confirmed the amount and means of payment. Traders remain official sellers and orders go back to the Shop app, Shopify presenting the device as a "personal shopper" that everyone freely chooses.
