Publicis accelerates to +5 per cent in the third quarter, driven by demand for AI-powered marketing

The French advertising group has exceeded market expectations, confirmed its annual targets and noted that clients are keen to embrace AI in marketing but remain cautious about their major transformation projects.

On October 13, Publicis Groupe reported third-quarter net revenue of €3.81 billion, up 5% organically, above the 4.8% consensus forecast and accelerating compared to the first half of the year. The media division, which accounts for 62% of net revenue, grew at a pace close to 10%, driven by AI-based marketing services and market share gains. Consulting, with Publicis Sapient, fell slightly due to wait-and-see clients, but the group expects a return to growth in the fourth quarter.

Two speeds of adoption

Arthur Sadoun describes a demand with two regimes: advertisers spend quickly on marketing to defend their turnover, but more cautiously engage in company-wide transformation projects, held back by economic uncertainty. The CEO also highlights the concentration of the sector: the three largest groups are now expected to win 91% of major tenders, compared to 74% a year earlier.

Asked about employment, he argues that AI does not necessarily destroy jobs when there is growth, recalling that the workforce has increased from 65,000 people in 2017 to 115,000 today. Publicis maintains an operating margin slightly higher than last year's 18.2% and a free cash flow of around 2.2 billion euros.
