Ireland: Google.org is funding €4.5 million for AI-powered weather forecasting and 560 weather stations in schools

Met Éireann, University College Dublin and the AIMSIR centre will combine Google Earth AI, satellite imagery and a network of solar stations installed in schools across the 26 counties.

Google.org, Google's philanthropic branch, is investing 4.5 million euros over four years in an Irish research program on weather forecasting by IA. Half of the envelope, 2.25 million, comes back to the AIMSIR centre, the country's first research centre dedicated to weather-related AI, alongside Met Éireann, University College Dublin and the Co-Centre Climate+.

Students as observers

The project plans to deploy 560 solar-powered weather stations in schools in 26 counties of the Republic. They will transmit one measurement per minute, publicly available online, to complement satellite images and Google Earth AI tools. Teachers will receive training and educational sequences to exploit this data in the classroom, in connection with the Scoilnet educational portal and teacher networks.

Kent Walker, President of Google's International Affairs, is waiting for this mix of local observations and AI tools to better predict violent storms and flash floods. Professor Andrew Parnell is committed to freely publishing all measurements, station plans and code.
