A study involving eight secondary school IT teachers shows that using AI to create teaching materials is particularly helpful in clarifying one’s teaching objectives.
Generative AI is increasingly being used to create and adapt course materials, but little is known about how it fits into discipline-specific practices. Researchers conducted two qualitative studies with eight high school computer science teachers: focus groups on their preparation habits, and then brainstorming sessions aloud with LessonBuilder, a structured AI-assisted lesson creation tool.
A negotiation between intention and result
Teachers build their pedagogical intentions as they create and review materials. They selectively assign certain tasks to AI, but retain the responsibility of judging whether content is ready for the classroom. Examining what AI offers pushes them to clarify what they really want, making preparation a constant back-and-forth. In computer science, this evaluation also focuses on the adequacy of programming exercises at the student level.
The team derives a conceptual model and design recommendations for tools that leave control to the teacher.
