UkrMeme: a Ukrainian corpus to analyze persuasion techniques in memes

Two resources combine Ukrainian images and text to evaluate persuasion. The study also compares the explanations of the models to the indices they mobilise.

UkrMeme brings together 200 Ukrainian memes produced during the war, annotated according to their persuasion techniques. The researchers also propose PTM-UA, a translation of part of the Propaganda 950 corpus that preserves the original images.

Vision-language models are tested without prior examples, with the image alone, the text alone, or both together. The study compares a method of attributing internal contributions to the explanations written by the models. This work provides a framework for analyzing persuasion; it does not constitute a universal detector of disinformation.
