An Amazon planned data center in Pecos County, Texas, would include an on-site natural gas-fired power plant that is allowed to emit up to 33 million tons of CO2 per year — more than any other power plant in the United States. Amazon's overall carbon emissions jumped 16% the previous year, in contradiction to its commitment to be carbon neutral by 2040, largely driven by the expansion of its artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The plan illustrates a broader trend among tech giants as they increasingly finance natural gas installations to power their particularly energy-intensive data centers. An Amazon spokesperson defended the decision by citing a different global energy context than the one that prevailed when the company's climate pledge was made.
