Yandex’s third data centre taken offline in four days: YandexGPT and Yandex Cloud disrupted following a drone strike in Vladimir

A Ukrainian strike on Sunday brought Yandex’s 40–50 MW facility in Vladimir to a standstill, disrupting more than 80 computing, storage and AI services, including the YandexGPT API.

On the night of Saturday 10 to Sunday 11 October, Ukrainian drones targeted a Yandex data centre located in the Energetik district of Vladimir, east of Moscow. The Russian group confirmed the shutdown of this site with an estimated power of between 40 and 50 megawatts, designed to accommodate up to 2,880 server racks. According to the Kyiv Post, which relies on Russian and Ukrainian Telegram channels, this is the third Yandex facility to be hit in four days, after Sasovo (Ryazan region) on Thursday 8 and Kaluga on Friday 9 October.

AI on the front line of outages

More than 80 services were disrupted. On the consumer side: the Alice voice assistant, Yandex Music, Telemost video conferencing and the connected home. On the enterprise side, Yandex Cloud experienced cascading cuts in compute, storage, managed Kubernetes, PostgreSQL and ClickHouse, as well as in AI interfaces: the YandexGPT API, SpeechKit speech recognition and Vision OCR. Third-party customers followed: banking applications, VTCs and brands such as Magnit and Fix Price.

The episode shows that the infrastructure that runs AI models has become a military target in its own right: by concentrating inference services and enterprise hosting, a single physical site can cripple a large part of a country's digital economy.
