NBER study measures the real impact of AI on business productivity

A survey of American business leaders reveals uneven productivity gains across sectors, and expectations of workforce reductions concentrated in large companies.

A study by the National Bureau of Economic Research, conducted among American business leaders, shows that more than half of them have already invested in artificial intelligence, with small structures lagging far behind large ones. The reported labour productivity gains are positive but very uneven across sectors, more marked in high-skilled services and finance than in the rest of the economy.

Large companies anticipate workforce reductions related to the adoption of AI, while smaller companies expect modest gains without staff reductions—the study finds no evidence of an aggregate decline in employment in the short term. Instead, it documents a gradual reallocation of work: a decline in routine administrative tasks, an increase in demand for skilled technical positions.
