ICANN: 1,615 applications for new domain extensions, with OpenAI and Meta vying for .agent, .agi and .asi

The first round of top-level domain applications in years is dominated by AI: ten applicants for .agent, seven for .agi and six for .asi.

ICANN, the organization that manages Internet domain names, has published the list of applications received for new extensions: 1,615 applications submitted by 481 players. Artificial intelligence is omnipresent. Ten companies, including Meta and OpenAI, covet .agent ; seven are targeting .agi and six .asi, with OpenAI in both cases. Four candidates are eyeing .intelligence, and Meta is one of the two contenders for .superintelligence.

Generic and Branded Extensions

OpenAI has filed a total of fifteen applications, Meta twenty-one. The batch mixes hundreds of generic extensions, from .geek to .anime, and 345 brand extensions allowing a company to manage its own suffix, such as .zoom or .bankofamerica. When several candidates target the same string, ICANN will have to decide between the requests, which suggests a battle over the terms most related to AI agents.
