The manufacturer of Atlas is bringing on board an AI specialist rather than a robotics engineer, at a time when Hyundai is expecting it to deliver 30,000 humanoid robots by 2028.
Boston Dynamics has chosen Rohit Prasad as its new chief executive. A former senior vice president at Amazon, he led artificial intelligence research and the Alexa teams, which he had tried to upgrade after the arrival of ChatGPT. He takes up his position this week, after an interim period opened by the departure of Robert Playter in May 2026, amid a wave of departures in the management team.
From viral video to factory
The profile is surprising: Rohit Prasad comes from software and language, not mechanics. However, his mission is industrial. According to information relayed by Gizmodo, the company was only assembling about four Atlas robots per month in May, while it promises its investors 30,000 humanoids by 2028, including 25,000 for Hyundai and Kia plants and 5,000 for other customers.
Each Atlas is now estimated to cost between $130,000 and $140,000 to produce, a price that is expected to drop to around $30,000 after 50,000 units. Hyundai's Savannah, Georgia, plant is to serve as both a robot factory and the first working ground for these humanoids.
