Meta Ray-Ban glasses: Hans Anders suspends sales in the Netherlands and Belgium

The optician is removing Meta’s smart glasses from its shops and website, whilst hospitals and the Dutch Ministry of Defence are tightening their rules.

The optician chain Hans Anders has withdrawn, with immediate effect, Meta's camera glasses from all its Dutch and Belgian points of sale, and has also stopped selling them online. The retailer is talking about a temporary suspension, the time to see how the public and political debate around these devices evolves, and does not rule out putting them back on the shelves later.

The privacy controversy is swelling in the Netherlands: several hospitals and the Ministry of Defence have adopted restrictions, the Dutch data protection authority (AP) has warned against capturing videos of identifiable people without their consent, and the consumer association Consumentenbond is threatening Meta with legal action if the product is not modified.
