The British service accuses the CGTRI of funding AI and cybersecurity research for the Chinese Ministry of State Security. Beijing denies this.
On 30 September, MI5 published an espionage alert for the first time autonomously. It targets the China General Technology Research Institute (CGTRI), also known as the China Academy of General Technology, which British domestic intelligence presents as a relay of the Chinese Ministry of State Security (MSS). According to MI5, its raison d'être is to finance work that directly strengthens the technical espionage capabilities of this ministry.
More than a hundred academics with links to the United Kingdom are said to have contributed to projects funded by this institute, on artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, concealed communications or steganography. Some of them were probably unaware of the origin of the funds. MI5 is asking institutions to review without delay any ongoing or planned collaboration with the CGTRI, and researchers to trace their projects with Chinese partners back to the final funder.
The Chinese embassy in London described the accusations as "imaginary and purely invented" and said it had sent official protests to the British government.
