The British bank is expanding its partnership with Anthropic: Claude Code is set to be rolled out to 50 per cent of its developers by the end of 2026, and then to the majority of its engineers in 2027.
Barclays is deepening its collaboration with Anthropic and deploying Claude across its entire business, from modernizing legacy systems to accelerating software development. The stated goal is that half of the bank's developers should be using Claude Code by the end of 2026, and the majority of its software engineers by 2027.
Uses already in production
The deployment is based on tools that have been running since 2025. The internal document retrieval assistant, built on an augmented generation by recovery (RAG) architecture, is used by Barclays UK's teams that support more than 20 million individual customers: more than 16,000 employees have adopted it and it has processed more than a million requests. In the market bank, Claude models sort and enrich around 120,000 customer emails per day to direct them to the right processing circuit.
The group's two co-chief operating officers, Anne Marie Darling and Craig Bright, present AI as an increasingly agentic capability, integrated into the way the bank designs, tests, secures and operates its systems, within a governance framework specific to a highly regulated sector.
