"The Death of Web Development Education": Books and Courses Collapse in the Face of AI Assistants

Book sales have fallen to zero, course revenues halved, blog traffic captured by robots: an essay brings together the testimonies of web trainers.

In a long essay published on his blog, developer and trainer molily makes a harsh observation: generative AI has caused the paid market for web development education to collapse. Technical books, online courses, tutorials and video channels are no longer enough to support their authors, while developers now ask a chatbot what they are looking for in these resources.

The author collects testimonials. JavaScript author Axel Rauschmayer explains that his book revenue, which was still sufficient in 2024, has fallen to zero in 2026, and that his blog traffic comes almost entirely from AI bots. Course creator Josh W. Comeau mentions a drop of more than half of his income, as does Kyle Cook, from the web channel Dev Simplified. Other trainers tell of the closure of their training activities, and of projects cancelled one by one.

Beyond income, the essay denounces the use of educational content to train models, without agreement or remuneration, and a concentration of knowledge in the hands of a few companies. It rejects injunctions to "adapt" and calls for the rebuilding of teacher networks based on open technologies.
