Amazon has committed to the Calvert Cliffs nuclear power station for 20 years; the plant will generate 190 MW

The agreement with Constellation covers 690 MW and supports $3 billion worth of works, as well as a 20-year extension of the two reactors at Maryland’s only nuclear power station.

Amazon and Constellation Energy have signed a 20-year power purchase agreement for 690 MW of power generated by the Calvert Cliffs plant in Maryland. The commitment is expected to finance more than $3 billion in investments at the 1,790 MW site, including a 190 MW power increase expected between 2030 and 2032.

Reactors extended thanks to data centers

The revenue visibility offered by Amazon should allow Constellation to apply for a new twenty-year license extension for the two reactors, which were previously scheduled to be shut down in 2034 and 2036. Calvert Cliffs supplies about 40% of Maryland's electricity and 80% of its carbon-free production. The operator even plans to study 2,000 MW of new reactors there.

For Amazon, the objective is to secure low-carbon electricity available at all times for its facilities in the region, while the demand from data centers linked to AI is pushing digital giants to multiply long-term bets on nuclear power.
