Sora is no more: OpenAI shut down the video API on 24 September, five months after the app was launched

Following the app and the web in April, the Sora 2 API was discontinued on the announced date. Developers who had integrated it now find themselves without a replacement video model from OpenAI.

OpenAI ended the Sora API on September 24, 2026, the last gateway to its video generation model. The web and mobile versions had already been closed on 26 April; the API was announced as early as March 24, with six months' notice.

Sora 2 and Sora 2 Pro models are no longer accessible to third-party applications that used them to produce video. On the OpenAI developer forum, users report 404 errors on old access points and wonder about the fate of the characters created in the application. OpenAI indicated that data related to Sora would be permanently deleted once the export window passed.

The abandonment illustrates the company's focus on professional agents and usages, at the expense of the generic video, a costly computing niche where Google, Runway or Kling remain present.
