Signed on 29 September, the decree requires the acronym ‘SI’ to be used in all government documents and instructs the scientific adviser to propose a federal definition of the term.
Announced ten days earlier, the measure is now active. By a decree signed on September 29, 2026, Donald Trump asked all federal departments and agencies to use "Super Intelligence" and "SI" in their official letters, public communications and policy documents, and no longer use the terms "Artificial Intelligence" or "AI".
A change of label, no perimeter
According to the White House fact sheet, the text justifies this choice by the idea that the old term no longer reflects what these technologies allow. The President's Science and Technology Advisor must propose a federal definition of "Super Intelligence" and identify other necessary executive actions; several media say it has 60 days. According to the press, the regulations, contracts and subsidies already published do not have to be rewritten, and the new label currently covers exactly the same technologies as the existing federal definition of AI.
The signature comes on the same day as the "morally binding" agreement reached at the White House with the major laboratories on their internal security controls.
