Seven months after raising €122 billion valued at €852 billion, the company is back in action to finance a "bridge" until an IPO that has now been postponed by a year.
OpenAI is reportedly in discussions to raise at least $30 billion, based on a valuation of around $1,400 billion excluding new contributions. The gap with the previous round is striking: in March, the company had closed $122 billion on a valuation of $852 billion. The pace of revenue growth has a lot to do with it — annualized revenue, at $40 billion in August, is said to have increased by about 70% since July.
The stock market calendar is moving backwards. The IPO envisaged for 2026 has been postponed to 2027, and this round of financing explicitly serves as transitional financing until then. Sam Altman justified the delay by the priority given to the security of systems, in undiplomatic terms: according to him, it is unacceptable to accept a 10% probability that humanity will move through it before the end of the decade.
The competitive context has also changed. Anthropic had taken the lead at the beginning of the year; OpenAI's refocusing on code and developer uses has reversed the trend, which the targeted valuation is intended to reflect.
