Cigna entrusts to OpenAI models the preparation of the work of her oncology nurses

Announced on September 25, the partnership aggregates clinical records, pharmacy, behavioural health and reimbursement fees, with the responses of patients themselves.

On September 25, 2026, the American insurer Cigna and OpenAI announced a collaboration that introduces OpenAI's reasoning models into the insurer's clinical workflows. The first scope chosen is oncology.

The tools are aimed at nurse specialists and case managers at Cigna Healthcare and Accredo specialty pharmacy. They bring together information that is currently dispersed: clinical data, medication history, behavioral health and insurance coverage, as well as information provided directly by patients, such as questions, reported adverse events, personal preferences. The stated goal is to better coordinate care between two medical visits.

Both companies insist on maintaining human decision-making: the tools are presented as a support for the expertise of care teams, not as a substitute. Katya Andresen, head of data and AI at Cigna, talks about anticipating patients' needs; Nate Gross, head of health at OpenAI, highlights the legibility of the care pathway. The partnership is to extend beyond cancer in the future.
