Claude Sonnet 5.5: 30% more speed, up to 30% less cost per job, at the same price

On September 28, Anthropic released the second model in its 5.5 family. API pricing is not moving: the economy comes from a model that achieves the same result with fewer tool calls.

On September 28, 2026, Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 5.5, the second model in its 5.5 family after Opus 5.5. The publisher claims more than 30% faster text generation and a reduced cost per task of up to 30% in its own measurements.

The drop does not come from a change in the grid: the price remains that of Sonnet 5, i.e. $2 per million entry tokens and $10 per million exit tokens. The economy is due to the trajectory of the model, which mobilizes fewer tool calls and fewer tokens to achieve the same result — a way of reminding us that the posted price of a model says little about the real price of a completed work.

Anthropic positions Sonnet 5.5 for well-structured everyday tasks: bug fixing, document production, presentations and spreadsheets, in addition to Opus 5.5 reserved for work requiring finer judgment. The model is available under the identifier claude-sonnet-5-5 on all platforms, including Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure, with the non-retention option already offered on Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.
