Roche builds autonomous laboratories and announces more than 80% success in Phase III this year

At Pharma Investor Day, the Swiss group claims "IA independence" in R&D and re-allocates approximately CHF 2 billion in savings to its programs.

Roche detailed a plan for AI-driven labs operating without continuous human intervention at its Pharma Investor Day on September 28. Aviv Regev, executive vice president of research and early development at Genentech, speaks of a search for "AI independence" in R&D and says that construction of these labs has begun.

The group is putting a figure on its ambitions. About 2 billion Swiss francs ($2.41 billion) in R&D savings are being reallocated to productivity programs and projects. Roche is targeting up to twenty new molecular entities on the market by 2030 and has announced a success rate in phase III of more than 80% since the beginning of 2026, compared to 65% in 2025. Its Target Nexus tool is expected to influence 80% of research portfolio decisions by the end of the year.

The integration is already partially in place: 40% of pipeline decisions made between the fourth quarter of 2025 and the second quarter of 2026 had a tracked AI or computational contribution. The group also recently opened its Boston Innovation Center, part of whose activity focuses on machine learning applied to drug development.
