AI cognitive behavioral therapy app proves to work against anxiety

A randomised controlled trial with 316 participants in the UK shows that the CBT-based PATH app reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression more than a conventional self-help site.

A randomized controlled clinical trial evaluated the effectiveness of PATH, an artificial intelligence-based mental health application, among 316 British participants aged 19 to 70 years. Participants were divided into a group using the app, combining conversational therapy inspired by cognitive-behavioural therapies and interactive tools, and a control group oriented to a self-help site of the UK Public Health Service. Anxiety and depression scores were measured at baseline and then at two, eight and twelve weeks.

The results show that the PATH group achieved better results than the control group, providing additional empirical evidence that an AI application specifically designed for therapeutic purposes can provide substantial support to people with generalized anxiety disorders. However, the authors call for caution: this result concerns a specific application and cannot be generalized to all AI applications in mental health.
